Youth Leadership | Forest Products Industry and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into Campus - "World Environment Day" Activities

On June 5, the "Youth Leadership for Forest Products Industry and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into Campus - World Environment Day Activities " was held at the ZJU-Ninghai Joint Research Center for Bio-based Materials and Carbon Neutral Development in China. The event aimed to provide an opportunity for international organizations, companies, academics and university students to exchange SDGs and actions, and to gather wisdom for a better future.

The event was hosted by the Secretariat of the Global Green Supply Chains (GGSC) Initiative, and jointly organized by the Youth League Committee of Zhejiang University International Campus, the Ninghai County Committee of the Communist Youth League, the Youth League Committee of Ninghai County Natural Resources and Planning Bureau, and the ZJU-Ninghai Joint Research Center for Bio-based Materials and Carbon Neutral Development. 

This event is the second stop of GGSC's campus activities. Yuan Weiji, deputy director of Ninghai County Natural Resources and Planning Bureau and member of the Party Committee, Qi Haicheng, deputy secretary of Ninghai Youth League County Committee, and Ye Chenchen, secretary of the Youth League Committee of Zhejiang University International Campus (Haining International Campus) attended the meeting. More than 40 Chinese and foreign young students and young teachers from Zhejiang University, Zhejiang A&F University, US’s University of Southern California, Southwest Forestry University and other universities were invited to communicate with industrial experts face-to-face, and discussed youth leadership and sustainable development action plans together. 

Luo Xinjian, Secretary General of GGSC, Xiao Yan, Qiushi Chair Professor of Zhejiang University and Director of ZJU-Ninghai Joint Research Center for Bio-based Materials and Carbon Neutral Development, Li Nuyun, Dean of Chinese Institue of Green Carbon, Wen Wu, Professor of International Business School,Zhejiang University, and Wu Ruijia and Dai Shaolei, doctoral students of Zhejiang University, made keynote speeches at the meeting.

In his opening speech, Professor Xiao Yan welcomed the participating experts and young students. He highly praised the series of activities for the sustainable development of the forest products industry, believing that such activities are conducive to promoting the youth to take part in sustainable development and jointly building a green and sustainable future.

Secretary-General Luo Xinjian introduced the state of global forest resources, the international trade situation of forest products, the overview of GGSC and the youth action of GGSC. She pointed out that the forest products industry provides the society with a large number of renewable, carbon storage, and naturally degradable wood forest products, and forest products are important carbon storage carriers, in addition, the forest products industry is of great significance to sustainable development. She believes that young people are an important force for global sustainable development, and hopes that this event will help young students and scholars to communicate and inspire young people to contribute wisdom to sustainable development.

Dean Li Nuyun gave a report on "Value Realization of Ecological Products and Carbon Sink Trading", introducing the ecological carbon sink and carbon emission reduction mechanism at home and abroad, the domestic and foreign carbon market and carbon sink trading, and the biodiversity conservation mechanism based on carbon credits. She called on more domestic and foreign enterprises and the public to participate in carbon offsets, to achieve carbon neutrality, to protect biodiversity, and contribute to building a community with a shared future for mankind and mitigating climate change.

Professor Wen Wu gave a report with a topic of "Global Dynamics of Digital Currency and Carbon Finance". His speech focused on the global climate change crisis and carbon finance, as well as the attempt of digital currency based on carbon finance. He called on young students to participate in sustainable development,relying on China's leading advantages in new energy, environmental protection, energy conservation, low-carbon and other science and technology industries, lead the global "carbon-based digital currency" innovation, and reconstruct the "Amazon Forest Agreement" based on carbon consensus.

Wu Ruijia, a doctoral student, shared "Research Experience of Bamboo and Wood Architecture: A Case Study of Multi-storey Bamboo Structures". From a professional perspective, she introduced the specific situation of the world's first bamboo structure multi-high-rise building—— ZJU-Ninghai Joint Research Center for Bio-based Materials and Carbon Neutral Development, and pointed out the significance of bamboo and wood architecture for sustainable development.

Dai Shaolei, a doctoral student, shared a brief introduction to the structure of low-carbon Glubam in Ninghai County. He  said that the young are needed to connect the construction industry and other industries, so as to achieve breakthroughs and sharing of sustainable development between industries.

During the Q&A session, the young students actively interacted with the participating experts. And than, the participants visited the ZJU-Ninghai Joint Research Center for Bio-based Materials and Carbon Neutral Development, as well as the the Chashan Forest Farm in Ninghai County, to observe the ecological environment of the forest farm and understand the positive attempts and efforts made by the forest farm in carbon neutrality, and explore the harvesting and processing technology and technology of major timber and bamboo, getting in touch with and understand the positive value of the forest products industry.

On this April 21, the Forest Products Industry and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on Campus - "World  Earth Day" event was held at the University of Macau. It was the first stop of GGSC's campus activities. In the future, GGSC will continue to hold such activities. Welcome college students and scholars from all over the world to join.
